The Last Sigh se formó en enero de 1997. Los miembros fundadores de la banda fueron David García Sanz -guitarra y voz-, Víctor Manteiga Montesdeoca -bajo-, Sigfrido Oliva Martel -guitarra-, y Óliver Gil Cáceres -batería. Tras varias alteraciones en dicha formación, los miembros originales se volvieron a reunir, siendo en la actualidad la formación la misma que la del inicio.
The Last Sigh se mantuvo ocupado en la composición de canciones desde el momento de su fundación hasta el verano de 1998, momento en el que la banda comenzó la grabación de su primera demo. Todo el proceso de producción del CD se desarrolló en el local de ensayo de The Last Sigh, donde también cuentan con un estudio de grabación casero. Debido a diversas causas, el CD no se publicó hasta junio de 1999, casi un año después de haber empezado el proceso de producción. La demo se tituló 'Through the Last Sigh', y contenía 7 canciones. Algunos de los títulos que se pueden encontrar en esta primera maqueta se titulan 'Fire', 'Dreamer', 'Inside Flames', y 'Get Lost with Me'.

La publicación de 'Through the Last Sigh' mantuvo a la banda ocupada en asuntos relacionados con promoción. 'Música Activa', una asociación juvenil dedicada a impulsar la escena musical del sur de Gran Canaria, ha contribuido de forma importante a la promoción del compact, y además ha provisto a la banda con numerosas posibilidades de actuar en directo. Durante un año y medio The Last Sigh actuó en diversos lugares de la isla, tocando tanto temas pertenecientes a la primera demo como canciones nuevas. The Last Sigh a compartido escenario con bandas como Witches' Sabbath, The Mistake, Nine Lost Children, Scythe, Species, Hamlet, Avulsed, Koma, Sociedad Alkohólika entre otras. Los medios de comunicación no han estado ciegos a la actividad de The Last Sigh , llegando a aparecer en diversas revistas, periódicos, programas de radio, etc. El trabajo promocional de la banda les a llevado a la venta y distribución de gran número de copias no sólo en España, sino también en otros países del continente europeo.

En enero del 2001, The Last Sigh comenzó la grabación de 'Letter of Love, Knowledge, and Hate', la segunda maqueta de la banda. También en esta ocasión fue la propia banda la que se ocupó del proceso de producción del CD. La demo tiene una duración de 54 minutos, y contiene 9 temas. Algunos de los temas de este segundo trabajo son 'Bloody Deal', 'Without You', 'Remember', 'My Mind to Fly', y 'Awake'. El CD se publicó en agosto del 2001.
El estilo de The Last Sigh no es fácilmente clasificable. La esencia de su música tiene mucho que ver con tendencias extremas del metal como pueden ser el Death y el Doom metal. Sin embargo, la banda admite no estar condicionada por criterios de clasificación estilística, lo cual les permite ser libres para crear su propia música. Bandas como Edge of Sanity, At the Gates, Paradise Lost, Dark Tranquillity, Anathema, Amorphis, Alice in Chains, Black Sabbath, y otras son reconocidas influencias del grupo, aunque cuando se les pregunta, contestan que, en su opinión, todo aquello que han escuchado alguna vez podría ser considerado como influencias que, de forma subconsciente, contribuyen en cierto grado a la composición de su propia música. Ellos consideran que el hecho de que no se les pueda clasificar fácilmente convierte el trabajo de The Last Sigh en algo rico y complejo.
